Wind turbines make a great addition to a new or existing solar array. They have an energy generation advantage over a comparable sized solar array if there is adequate wind energy at the location. Utah wind resources, however, is not well understood but that is quickly changing. There are plenty of locations that are great for small residential wind turbines. Southeast Idaho also has areas of good wind resources for small wind turbines as well. To determine if there are acceptable wind resources each site should be reviewed to understand its full wind energy potential. The evaluation will help determine if a wind turbine is right for the location. If you think you have good wind resources then there is a good chance you do! Wind maps can provide a good starting point but these are generally macro views of an area, however they do provide a useful overview of a given region. The downfall is they might not account for micro conditions within the particular region. A good resource map can be found at the Utah Geological Survey.
